Project Overview
Have you ever thought that our body may need data from the sun when data from screens is abundant? Chasing light is a generative art project that visualises data on the longitudinal effects of screen time during adolescence. We built the installation using a metaphorically inspired plant chasing the light, which reflects on human light source preferences and how our bodies react to screen time. It falls at the intersection between the two themes: Data & Me, and Environmental Impacts. In this study, we present an overview of the literature that reflects on the perspectives of metaphors, critical design, and cognitive representations. The exhibit leverages the metaphor of a plant to provide viewers with a mental modal encouraging their interaction and perception of the system. The integrated algorithm gives rise to emergent behaviours resonant with the contradictions of wants and needs while enabling viewers to draw the contrast between manmade and natural environments. The installation is intended to understand the long-term psychological and physical consequences of our choices of lifestyle. We conclude by reflecting on our design process and outcomes and summarising our ideas for future work.
